Skadarsko jezero

Skadar Lake

Skadar Lake is located in the southeast of Montenegro, in a valley separated from the sea by Rumija mountain.

The lake is 50km long and 14km wide. Its surface area is not always the same. In spring and autumn when the water level rises, the surface area is about 500 km², while in summer at low water level it is about 350km².

The border with Albania is also located on the Lake. Montenegro owns 63.2% of the lake area. The coast is ragged, with numerous bays and picturesque fishing villages. It is 168km long, of which 110.5km belongs to Montenegro.

More than 100,000 trees

Old Olive Trees

Olive trees can be found in almost the entire territory of Bar, while the majority of them are in Mrkojevići. They are mostly located in olive groves in the part of Komina near the coastal radio station, in Utjeha, in Ravanj from Veliki Pijesak to Pečurice through Dubrava, but also in Sutomore, in Miljevci, and in Šušanj, Dabanovo and Zaljevo. The oldest olive trees are in Komina, and there was a recent interesting case in Ravanj, where the entire olive grove was discovered, with about twenty ancient trees.

Skadarsko jezero

Raduš

Lake “eye” Raduš is the deepest (underwater source) on Skadar Lake, 60 metres deep, and according to some data even deeper.

Manastir Starčevo

Starčevo Monastery

The monastery is located on the island of Starčevo on Skadar Lake. It dates from the time of Đurađ Balšić. It was founded by Father Makarije in 1377, who lived on the island as an ascetic, and after whom Starčevo was named. The monastery complex consists of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin, konak building, supporting facilities and a fence wall with a gate and several built-in terraces. The monastery was a transcription centre. Many manuscripts were transcribed, and books were bound and decorated.

Haj Nehaj Fortress

Haj-Nehaj

The remains of the medieval town of Nehaj, built in the 15th century, are located about 10 kilometres from Bar, northwest, on an inaccessible hill above the sea, at an altitude of 225 metres. It was first mentioned in 1542 and was built by the Venetians for defence.

One of the biggest in the world

Cathedral of St. Jovan Vladimir

At the very entrance to the town from the direction of Budva, across the hotel “Princess”, the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Jovan Vladimir was built, as a place of gathering, brotherly love and forgiveness. The temple decorates Bar and the entire coast, providing an unforgettable view and experience of spiritual fulfilment.

The temple is dominated by seven large crosses. The central gilded cross, 4.60 meters high, weighing 800 kg, reaching the highest level of 40 metres, is unique in Europe and worldwide. The cross is distinctive, modelled on the famous Vladimir’s Cross, the largest relic of Bar since ancient times, a symbol of faith, love and hope. The iconostasis, frescoes, altar, holy table, deacon, and other elements of the interior decoration of the temple are unique and magnificent.
